The 1906 Earthquake is one of the top natural disasters of all time. But, what of the future?
Most of San Francisco has now been built with building codes that have improved earthquake resiliancy in modern buildings. The reality is that the earthquake building codes in California are meant to withstand an earthquake of a certain magnatude. Say 7 or 8 magnatude. But, what happens when an earthquake of 10 or larger comes along?
Those buildings of man will fall again.
This next concept is far more devastating...
As man lives only 80-100 years, the history we carry in our heads is quite short when compared to the history of the world. What happens when an earthquake zone that has been active in the past 200-300 years, but not in the past 100 years, becomes active again? Will those houses and buildings have been constructed for earthquake building codes that are strong enough to withstand a large earthquake? (no)
This is the situation America finds herself in concerning the New Madrid Fault in: Missiouri, Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee
The New Madrid is "Bigger"
As you can see from the image above, the New Madrid Earthquake Zone is much more dense than even the San Andreas Fault of California, that ripped San Francisco in 1906.
In fact, the last time the New Madrid was active was 1811. Before the War of 1812. That is a long time ago.
The first hand accounts of destruction that this 1811 Earthquake did were much larger than the 1906 Earthquake in San Francisco. It rang church bells in Boston 1000 miles away.
Notice Where The New Madrid is Located...
The New Madrid Fault, the largest in the USA, is located just between the densely populated East Coast Areas, and the more sparcely populated areas of Western Missouri, near Jackson County.
